Home Blog

Yes, this is the first blog that I’ve actually been able to post from the comfort of my own home! Telstra have finally connected us to the telephone and internetworks, so no more USB sticks and internet cafés for me!

As a consequence of this, I ordered food off the internet for the first time here. The websites and ordering process aren’t as slick as UK online grocery sites – in many respects, technology and internet stuff seems to lag behind by a few years here. I’ll see how good they are at not substituting items, and delivering on time (2.5 hour delivery slots! Sheesh! You don’t know how spoilt you are with your ocado.com!) when it arrives on Monday.

Technology: they’re just about starting to do television broadcasts in HD. Sky, who usually lead in these things, won’t be broadcasting full HD until next year, apparently. And we might be getting DAB radio next year as well.

They Do Things Differently Here

For a country that is one of the largest dairy producers in the world, the range of cheese on offer is disappointing. Cheese seems to come in 4 flavours: Edam, Swiss, Colby, and Tasty. After that you have to go looking for expensive handmade cheeses, or imported cheese, so far as I can tell. I shall have to investigate further.

  1. Interesting cheese blog. I want to hear more. Are you dining on NZ lamb, green lipped mussels and Cloudy Bay, or do they have other stuff too ?
Is NZ a vegemite or marmite state of mind ? And can you get a curry ?
    So many questions.

  2. Cheese will be investigated in its entirety at some stage. I think I've found a good cheese shop...they sell Venezuelan beaver cheese.

So far I've only had one lamb burger, and not a single green-lipped mussel. They do have other, ordinary food here. Unfortunately(!) they have ridiculously high standards of animal welfare, which means you can't get cheapo battery-farmed chicken, the only choice is organic, corn-fed, free range, hand-cuddled chicken, which is twice the price. At least, in the supermarket that we shop in, anyway...which is more yer Waitrose than yer Lidl.

We live in a vegemite state, and Indian restauarants are here aplenty. Haven't tried any though.
